You can transfer credit from your studies abroad back to the U.S. The thing to know is when transferring credit is important to you. You should also want to make sure that if you get a BA/BS degree abroad, that it can be used to get your MA degree in the US. Now, if you plan to finish your BA/BS abroad and that will be the end of your formal education, then where you study probably doesn't matter. You will enter the work place (maybe even abroad) and most employers will be ecstatic that you studied abroad!

REGIONALLY ACCREDITED

But what if you need to transfer credits and/or a
BA/BS back to the U.S. There are two things you should do.
A good starting point is to look into a university that is regionally accredited in the U.S. Basically, most traditional colleges/universities in the U.S. are regionally accredited, which means that if you take classes at any of them, then another regionally accredited school has to accept your units.

Many international universities are accredited by UEASC, MSACS and WASC, one of the nationally recognized accreditation bodies. The Council on International Schools has a directory here her directory here:

Transfer credit from colleges/ not regionally accredited

You can apply to any college/university abroad and plan to get units or a degree there, as long as you work it out with the college/university in the U.S. you plan to transfer them to. Working with your current academic advisor in advance will solve this question if units and/or a degree will transfer.
