Studying abroad works out to be the same as living in the U.S. On camps housing means you will always live within walking distance to your classes, and there will be a commons for eating and hanging out. In most cases, a university will guarantee on-campus housing for your first year.
Because on-campus housing is usually reserved for freshmen, transfer students should ask housing about campus living. The university may also have housing specifically for international students, like they do here in the U.S. For instance, the University of Melbourne in Australia does not offer on-campus housing but does have the International House that has 300 students from over 30 countries living together. If they don't have on campus housing, they will have listings of local rentals.
