What you will likely get are Stafford Loans. Stafford Loans are guaranteed by the Federal Government, and help cover tuition and expenses you will incur abroad. Students dependent on their parents get a disbursement, between $5,500 for the first year abroad for an undergraduate to $7,500 for the third year and beyond. Graduate students get unsubsidized loans through FAFSA The great news is the interest on the Stafford Loans may be subsidized until you graduate. You don't need to make payments until the day you graduate (and in some cases, six months after that!). Stafford Loans are dispursed regardless of your credit history and have a fixed, interest rate as low as 3.4% in the current academic year.

In addition, your parents can apply for PLUS Loans through the U.S. Department of Education that can pay for most or all of the costs that the Stafford Loans cannot cover. PLUS loans are also available to graduate and/or professional degree students to pay for their education expenses. Those who apply for the PLUS must not have adverse-credit history and will pay a fixed interest rate of 7.9% and the interest needs to be paid after receiving the loan.
If you are independent of your parents, or your parents do not qualify for PLUS loans, then you can qualify for much larger amounts of Stafford Loans.
